Gideon

Gideon stretched, guiding his muscles through a practiced cool-down method after an intense workout. He’d been on edge for a few days and still hadn’t heard back from his contact in the mage community. He’d have to talk to Logan before he took further action, but his gut told him it was a step their pack needed to take sooner rather than later.

In fact, he’d even gone so far as to call in a favor from an old friend when his first efforts at making contact weren’t returned. The oracle wasn’t the only one with connections, and it was time for Gideon to use some of his own.

He paused to watch Ashley’s form across from him as she worked on her cooldown. All their human packmates were coming along nicely in their training. Ashley tended to be the most observant of the bunch, and Gideon found her awareness appealing for the most part.

Heather was their bulldog, aggressive and eager to punch first ask questions later. Will was more of a peacemaker, and he was coming to terms with his own role in life. Being in his twenties, Will hadn’t yet figured out his place in the world. Joey, on the other hand, wasn’t ready to settle down yet. He’d become more grounded since becoming part of their pack, which helped, but he was more fun-loving than the others, always quick with a smile or a laugh.

And Bailey, well, he was in a class all to himself. Strong and resilient, but with a continued fragility to him that had them all feeling extremely protective.

Then there was Taj. Not in their pack yet, although not for a lack of effort on Bailey’s part. He’d not been far from Gideon’s thoughts for days, not since he’d watched Taj leave after Jamal’s unexpected visit. Gideon had not been able to get either the scared look on Taj’s face or the fear of the unknown magic user out of his mind in days.

Even deep in his thoughts, Gideon sensed a threat nearby. His hand moved, his reactions instinctual and so deeply ingrained he’d reacted before his mind processed the need. He caught an object flying at his head, and when he opened his fingers, he found a small copper coin in his hand.

“Penny for your thoughts.” Ashley smirked at him from her position at the edge of the mat.

“They aren’t worth a halfpenny. Did you need something else?”

“Nope. I wanted some Bailey time. It’s been one of those weeks. I’m going to go bang on their door in a sec and make sure they aren’t getting their freak on. You looked distracted, though, so I thought I might have a chance at getting you.”

Gideon scoffed before tossing the coin back to her and raised a brow in question. Something in her tone had him curious as to her thoughts, and he wanted her to know he was there if she needed him. She shook her head, in denial as much as Gideon was about this whole communication thing Bailey insisted was good for their souls.
